Oral hygiene awareness week was inaugurated on 6th of August 2021, to spread the importance of oral hygiene amongst the masses. Oral hygiene day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. G. B. Shankwalkar, an illuminary to the society of Periodontics.
The inauguration program was arranged by the Department of Periodontology, Sharavathi dental college and hospital. Dr. Kala S Bhushan, professor, welcomed the gathering. Chief guests, Dr Samrat M R, principal, Dr Girdhar Kamath, former principal, Dr. Meghashyam Bhat, prof and Head department of Publichealth dentistry, inaugurated the program by lighting the lamp. Dr. Shrinidhi M S prof and Head, department of periodontology, apprised the masses about the effects of oral health on general health, while Dr. Meghashyam spoke on world statistics of periodontal disease and prevention measures. Dr. Chethana, professor briefed the audience about role of oral hygiene in pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. This was followed by a live demo of various oral hygiene aids by Dr. Bharathi, Reader, Dr Chaitra, senior lecturer and post graduate students. A patient educational video clipping, demonstrating oral hygiene techniques made by team Periodontics was displayed to all. Free scaling was scheduled in the department of periodontology for a period of one week to motivate the patients to maintain oral hygiene and seek treatment for their dental ailments.
Dr Samrat and Dr Kamath appreciated the work of Department of Perioodntology and advised them to continue such events in future and assured their full co operation in this regard. The meeting ended with a vote of thanks from Dr Chaitra.
